Travel Diary: 48 hours in Los Cabos
Currently en route back from Los Cabos… man, what a weekend! What started as a venue hunt turned into an adventurous 48 hrs. seeing ALL. THE. THINGS. What’s funny is that until this weekend I had never been to Los Cabos before. Cabo, sure, many times via cruises but I’d never ventured to Los Cabos and apparently I’ve been missing out. From our 48 hrs. there I would describe Los Cabos as the mature sister of Cabo. The whole experience is elevated; less crazy party, tequila shot vibes and more relax, eat well, and drink delicious cocktails vibes. The most amazing part is that it’s just a 2.5 hr. flight from LA… why are we not going more often?
Andy and I landed at 3pm on Friday and left at 3pm Sunday, here’s what we did during those 48 hours:
Once we landed we went straight to Mar Adentro, which is a stunning resort right on the water. Literally STUNNING. (UPDATE: this hotel changed owners and is now THE VICEROY LOS CABOS). It’s V modern, minimal, and chic. Right now they’re still finishing construction on the residence portion (barely noticeable) so rates are incredible. If you’ve even been contemplating a Los Cabos trip I say go just so you can experience this hotel before it becomes the most expensive hotel in the area.
Tip: we booked our stay on Hotel Tonight and got an ocean front suit (typically $800) for less than $200. I mean, you guys? Just look at it:
The design and architecture is perfecto and the hospitality is 5 stars; Andy said it’s the coolest and most luxe hotel he’s ever been to. Because they're a newer hotel they’re very willing to accommodate any request…. such as late night room service of churros and ice cream – haha!
They have a few restaurants, the most popular is in “THE NEST” which is situated in the middle of endless mirror pools. Secret: all the food for the hotel comes out of the nest so it really doesn’t matter which menu you order from. Some of our fave dishes: fish of the day sandwich, limone ceviche, chorizo quesadillas, and the breakfast chilaquillas.
Once we arrived we didn't leave until checked out the next day at 12pm. With the multiple pools, balcony bathtubs and beach … there’s really no reason to leave. This is definitely a couple’s getaway kind of place or perfect for a relaxing girl's weekend.
After we checked out we headed to ACRE which I have been eyeing for awhile for two reasons: the farm-to-table cuisine and the tree houses. I love me an adventure and tree houses in Mexico = adventure. The ACRE team was nice enough to let us stay in the almost finished tree house (12 total coming in the next few months) and it was an experience. When I booked this last minute trip I stupidly didn’t look at the weather… you guys, it was 90+ degrees and 76% humidity. Not the smartest idea to stay in a unairconditioned tree house but we survived and it was kind of fun. The tree houses themselves are super luxe: outdoor shower, bathroom, sitting area, outlets… all that jazz. In talking with the owner, we found out that upon completion of all 12, they’re planning to put AC in each one which will be amazing. And honestly, when the weather cools down (December – March) even with no AC they should be comfortable.
Along with tree houses, ACRE has a gorgeous pool (they have pool parties often), a fab bar with custom cocktails, and a restaurant with head chefs from Los Angeles + NY. The food was absolutely delicious! At one point Andy said it was the best food he’s had in a long time. The portions are very generous and the dishes are seasonal based on what’s grown on the local farm. Dishes we loved: agnolotti pasta, mango toast, Baja fish tacos, ranch chicken sammy, and the rosemary biscuits with butter. This is definitely a must-eat spot if you’re visiting Los Cabos.
On Sunday AM we woke up and walked over to Flora Farms (it’s just around the corner from ACRE) and enjoyed a yummy brunch. Again Andy was V impressed: “this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had.” Stick with me…. I’ll take you good places! Flora Farms has been around awhile and is definitely one of those Instagram spots you’ve probably seen on your feed in the past. It doesn’t disappoint with IG photo opps, that’s fore sure. It’s nice when a place is really beautiful AND has good food. Andy had the scrambled eggs with bacon and potatoes and I ate the rosemary ham, mozzarella and egg pizza with arugula on top. Like ACRE everything is just so fresh, so naturally it tastes amazing. Between brunching and exploring the property we spent around 2.5hrs there then headed back to ACRE to pack up our things, try the outdoor shower (amazing when it’s 91 degrees out) and go to the airport.
FAQs
Taxis: ask your hotel to schedule a pick-up from the airport. This will ensure you have a safe ride to your destinations. There are TONS of people wanting to drive you to and fro, so it’s best to schedule things in advance or only pick-up up a taxi from a reputable hotel or restaurant.
Safety: Los Cabos was recently added to US travel security list because of drug cartel activity. Here’s the thing: the cartels are fighting each other and not targeting tourists or big crowds (unlike many other places in the world). If you’re smart about where you’re going and how you get there, it shouldn’t be a problem. We never once felt scared or unsafe, even when we were out in the open sleeping in a tree house with no doors or walking the dirt road from ACRE to Flora Farms.
Reservations: for popular restaurants like ACRE and Flora Farms it’s best to have reservations ahead of time, especially as it gets into busy season (Nov – May).
Dollars vs. Pesos: prices are shown in pesos so don’t freak out when you see ceviche for 232… it’s not $232 US dollars. From what we found, everyone takes US dollars and major credit cards, so it wasn’t necessary to have pesos on hand.
